Potential sites for new BBC Wales base
BBC Wales executives have considered a number of sites for a potential new headquartered operation.
The publicly funded broadcaster is reviewing its property requirements, which could result in a move from its existing 1960s-built headquarters in the Llandaff suburb of Cardiff.
A number of property site developers have made presentations to BBC executives over the past few months.
Potential sites include the Roath Basin redevelopment project in Cardiff Bay, a well as Callaghan Square and the International Sports Village schemes, also in Cardiff.
Last October controller of BBC Wales, Menna Richards, launched a review of the broadcaster's property requirements in Wales, which as well as Broadcasting House in Llandaff, also include its Doctor Who studios in Upper Boat.
A BBC Wales spokesman said, "Without significant investment in this building in Llandaff, it'll no longer be fit for purpose. Our ambition is to move to a new building that will have the technology and resources to help us make more world-class content across all platforms."
It has not set a time frame for completion of the review, with all options remaining opening, including refurbishment of the existing site.
The Llandaff site would command strong interest, especially from housebuilders, with an asking price of £2m an acre potentially achievable - even in the current economic climate.
However, while the BBC National Orchestra of Wales recently vacated Llandaff for a new home in Cardiff Bay, a relocation of the whole of BBC Wales would prove logistically challenging.
