Royal Mail Strike Information

Communication Workers Union (CWU) national industrial action

Mail collection, distribution, processing and deliveries will take place as usual today following the CWU industrial action which affected processing and distribution services on Thursday and delivery and collection services on Saturday last week. Delivery times may be later than usual in some areas whilst we work to get services back to normal.

We are really sorry for the considerable inconvenience we know disruption to mail services is causing customers. We expect to deliver mail delayed by last week's strikes during the next few days.

CWU announces further strike action

The Communication Workers Union has notified Royal Mail of the intention to hold two further days of strike action on Friday 6th & Monday 9th November. If it goes ahead, this strike action will affect most mail services on both Friday 6th and Monday 9th November.

The details of the national industrial action are as follows:

Date Function striking General mail services impact
Friday 6th November All functions Limited collection, processing, movement and delivery of mail
Saturday 7th November No strikes taking place Mail services will operate as usual
Monday 9th November All functions Limited collection, processing, movement and delivery of mail

Mail services will take place Monday to Thursday this week and on Saturday 7th November, although delivery times may be later than usual in some areas because of a larger than usual amount of mail to sort and deliver.

The strike action planned for Friday 6th and Monday 9th November is not inevitable. We are continuing to urge the CWU to call off strike action and concentrate with us on supporting customers during the Autumn and Christmas peak mail period.

However, if this strike action does go ahead, some delay to the collection, distribution, processing and delivery of mail is inevitable.

Further details of the impact this proposed strike action will have on mail services is available on the regional pages and we will continue to update this over the next few days.

What we are doing to maintain and recover services during periods of disruption

Royal Mail has strong contingency plans in operation to do all we can to keep mail moving and minimise disruption for our customers:

  • Keep mail moving - over 900 managerial and contract drivers are moving mail around the country to minimise delay and disruption .
  • Delivering mail - we will continue to prioritise and deliver premium service (Special DeliveryTM and Royal Mail TrackedTM) items to customers.
  • Using around 5000 managerial and support people - to maintain premium services, open callers' offices and to collect mail from Post Office® branches, posting boxes and customers where possible on strike days.
  • Support the distribution of packets and parcels - we have five additional, dedicated and fully staffed sorting centres set up, to aid the distribution of goods through our network.
  • Deploying a targeted service recovery plan - concentrating our substantial support resources in areas most affected to deliver mail after strikes.
